Golden Retrievers are one of the most beloved dogs in the world. Their physical appearance and personality traits make them the favorite dog breed for many people. However, there is one big downside when we talk about Golden Retrievers. Goldens tend to have a short lifespan and will leave our hearts broken after they cross the rainbow bridge. Generally, Golden Retrievers live between 9 and 12 years on average. However, there are exceptions to this rule. One such exception is August the Golden Retriever, better known as Augie.
The Story Of August The Oldest Ever Golden Retriever
The story of August the Golden Retriever is a fascinating one. Augie was born on April 24, 2000., throughout her life, she had several owners.
Augie was a great dog, but she was adopted and returned to Golden Retriever Rescue twice in her life. The reasons for Augie’s return to the shelter were out of her control.
The last time she came to the Golden Retriever Rescue, her owner was in dire straits and she couldn’t care for Augie anymore.
Luckily, Jennifer Hettersheidt was working at the GRR Southern Nevada when Augie came back. Jennifer and her husband Steve decided to adopt August the Golden Retriever in 2014. Jennifer and Steve adopted and care for many senior dogs over the years.
When they decided to adopt Augie, she was already well above the average life expectancy for Golden Retrievers, so the couple thought she would be with them for a short time.
Little did they know that Augie would live to become the oldest Golden Retriever in history. As Jennifer and Steve said, Augie was fairly healthy even at 14 years old. The health checkup showed that Augie was suffering from renal issues. However, Jennifer and Steve provided special supplements for her kidneys that helped her recover.
Jennifer and Steve said that Augie was always healthy and happy during the time she was with them. August loved walks and playing fetch outside.
When Augie celebrated her 20th birthday on April 24, 2020, she not only became the oldest ever Golden Retriever but also an instant star on social media.
The Day When Augie’s Heart Stopped Beating
On March 31st, 2021, Jennifer Hetterscheidt announced that August the oldest Golden Retriever had crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
At the time of her death, Augie was 20 years and 11 months old which makes her the oldest ever Golden Retriever and the 19th oldest dog in the world.
The incredible Augie may have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, but the memory of her will live forever.
