Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Their beautiful long coat and personality traits make them our favorites among dogs. There are three types of Golden Retrievers, British (English) Golden Retriever, American Golden Retriever, and Canadian Golden Retriever.

Today we will talk about British (English) Retrievers and compare them with their American counterparts.

English/British Golden Retriever vs American Golden Retriever

Physical Characteristics

There are certain physical differences between English and American Golden Retrievers.

Head

English Goldens tend to have broader heads, round, level eyes, and ears level with eyes.

On the other hand, American Golden Retrievers have a narrower profile that blends into the skull. Their eyes are almond-shaped, while ears are behind and slightly above the eyes.

Neck

British (English) Golden Retriever will have a long, protruding neck with a clean, trimmed ruff.

American Golden’s neck is muscular, medium in length with an untrimmed ruff.

Build

English Goldens tend to be stockier and heavier.

On the other hand, American Goldens have a leaner appearance.

Tail

British (English) Golden Retriever has a tail that is leveled with his back.

American Golden has a tail with a slight upward curve.

Coat

Generally, British (English) Golden Retrievers have lighter coats with less hair than their American counterparts.

Height

Generally, English Goldens are shorter than the American ones. Typical male English Golden will stand between 22 and 24 inches tall at the withers, while females stand between 20 and 22 inches at the withers.

On the other hand, male American Goldens stand between 23 and 24 inches at the withers, while females are between 21.5 and 22.5 inches high.

Health And Lifespan

There is certain evidence that British (English) Golden Retrievers are healthier than their American counterparts.

Golden Retrievers are susceptible to cancer. In fact, researchers have found that cancer is responsible for the death of a staggering 61.8 percent of all American Golden Retrievers. However, that number is substantially smaller for the Golden Retrievers from the English bloodline. British Kennel Club Purebred Dog Health Survey for Golden Retrievers done in 2004 had discovered that 38.8 percent of English Golden Retrievers die from cancer. This number is still pretty high compared to other dog breeds, but it’s also substantially lower than in American Goldens.

Also, British Golden Retriever will have an average lifespan of 12 years and 3 months. On the other hand, American Golden Retrievers live around 10 years and 8 months.

However, the health and lifespan of your Golden Retriever do not depend on whether it belongs to the American or English bloodline. Your dog’s health depends on responsible breeding practices, good breeding lines, a healthy diet, and a healthy way of life.

Behavior

Generally, Golden Retrievers are friendly, loyal, intelligent, playful, good with kids, other animals, and strangers. Goldens are typically not aggressive dogs. However, they can become aggressive due to mistreatment and abuse. There is no substantial difference in the behavior between English and American Golden Retrievers.

However, British Golden Retriever tends to be calmer than the American one.
