Can dogs actually contract the novel Coronavirus?

As the world prepares for lockdown 2.0 many dog owners wonder „Can my pup get Covid?“.

Well, according to the Centers for Disease Control, “there is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading the virus in the United States. Therefore, there is no justification in taking measures against companion animals that may compromise their welfare.”

Okay, but the question is can my dog contract coronavirus?

The answer is yes and no!

To be clear, yes, dogs can contract coronaviruses, most commonly the canine respiratory coronavirus, however it’s not believed that they can contract the novel COVID-19!

There were certain cases there a pug for example in Chapel Hill, North Carolina was thought to be the first known case of a dog testing positive for COVID-19 in the United States. But, the thing is that subsequent testing showed that the dog never contracted the virus.
