Dog Car Harness: An Absolute Must-Have Safety Feature
Dog Car Harness

It’s always nice to bring your dog with you on a picnic or a vacation, or a simple short-distance ride in a car. Most dogs love it too! They get to be around their owners, look through the car window, or occasionally even hang their heads through the window. However, car rides are not without risks. There is always a possibility of a car crash or some other accident that can endanger your life and the life of your dog. Also, many owners allow their dogs to roam freely around the car during the ride, which can cause serious problems. Luckily, there is a solution – a dog car harness.

What Is A Dog Car Harness?

A dog car harness is a restraint that attaches to existing car seatbelts. A dog restrained with a car harness can still stand, sit or lie whenever he wants to.

Dangers Of Traveling With An Unrestrained Dog In A Car

It may seem cool and funny when your unrestrained dog hangs his head out of the car window to enjoy the wind. However, there are many dangers of traveling with an unrestrained dog in the car.

Tests have shown that during the collision at 60mph, an unrestrained 80-pound dog becomes a deadly 2.400-pound projectile. In a case of a car accident, not only will the unrestrained dog probably die. But, it also becomes a potential danger for everyone involved in that accident.

There are also other dangers involving an unrestrained dog and an open car window. For example, a dog may be injured by external debris while hanging his head out the window. Another possibility is that dog can jump out of the moving car through open windows.

Maybe you own a small dog and decide to hold him on your lap or allow him to enjoy the ride at the front passenger seat. Yes, you have your eyes on him all the time, but this is also dangerous.

A dog sitting in your lap may jump on you or otherwise distract you causing an accident. Also, the airbags positioned to protect the driver and passenger in the front seats can cause serious injuries to your dog.

Therefore, it is crucial for the safety of your dog and your safety that you somehow restrain your dog during the car ride. One of the most popular and most effective ways of doing it is a dog car harness.

How To Choose The Right Harness?

There are many different types of dog car harnesses produced by different companies. However, researchers have created dog crash-test dummies with realistic centers of gravity and different sizes and weights. Then, they tested 20 harnesses made by seven different companies.

The key factors in determining whether the harness will pass the test or not were:

  1. Does the harness have enough rotation control to stabilize and reduce the potential injury of the spine?
  2. Do dogs love the harness?

Tests by the Center For Pet Safety shown that most dog car harnesses don’t protect dogs during a car crash. CPS states that their testing and product performance requirements are rigorous, and the products need to meet the highest safety standards.

According to the information you can find on the CPS website, only three products have passed the crash test and have been certified by the CPS.

These are:

  • ZuGoPet The Rocketeer Pack
  • Sleepypod Clickit Sport (Sm, Med, Lg, XL)
  • Sleepypod Clickit Terrain Sm, Med, Lg, XL)
