There are dogs who are very slow runners. The French Bulldog can run under 15 mph, the Shih Tzu can run about 6 mph, and the Pug can run between 5–10 mph.
Of course, there are fast dogs out there too!. For example, the Doberman can run quite fast with a top speed of 51.5 km/h (32 mph). We also have the Great Dane and the German Shepherd dog with a top speed of 48 km/h (30 mph).
But is this it? Are these the fastest dogs on earth? No! Even though this speed is impressive, there are way faster dogs!
The Greyhound’s speed is really impressive! Their long, powerful legs, deep chest, flexible spine, and slim build allow them to reach an unbelievable speed of 72 km/h (45 mph). The incredible thing about these dogs is that they can actually reach this speed within 30 meters (98 feet) or six strides!
The Saluki is probably one of the oldest dog breeds in the world, and definitely one of the fastest! Of course, compared to Greyhounds, Salukis are slightly slower, however you can not be impressed with a top speed of 68.8 km/h (42.8 mph)!
Have you heard of the Vizsla dog? This breed originates from Hungry and is actually classed as a Pointer. Vizslas were always held in high esteem for its hunting and athletic ability. They have a very robust, yet light build with very defined muscles. This means that the Vizsla can hit a top speed of 64.4 km/h (40 mph)!
4. Jack Russell Terrier
Believe it or not, even though the Jack Russell Terrier is a bit smaller than the other breeds on our list, they still show an impressive speed. The Jack Russell Terrier is absolutely the fastest small dog breed with a top speed of 61.2 km/h (38 mph)!
5. Pharaoh Hound
The Pharaoh Hound might not be the fastest dog breed on our list, but it’s definitely the most interesting looking one! This breed is believed to be descended from the Tesem, one of Ancient Egypt’s hunting dogs. The Pharaoh Hound’s top speed is still very impressive at 56 km/h (35 mph).
In conclusion, there is no one universal answer on how fast can a dog run. Just like breeds are different in looks and personality, their running speed differs too! their speed varies from the Pug which runs at 5-10 mph to the Greyhound with the top speed of 72 km/h (45 mph).
