Diarrhea is not a disease, rather it’s a condition caused by the improper functioning of the dog’s digestive tract. Today we will talk about diarrhea in dogs. What causes diarrhea, what are the symptoms and how to treat diarrhea in dogs?
What Causes Diarrhea In Dogs?
Many factors can cause diarrhea in dogs, these are the most common ones.
- Eating toxic things
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Bacterial infection
- Parasites (coccidia, giardiasis)
- Food intolerance
- Drugs and antibiotics
- Poor gut health
How To Treat Diarrhea In Dogs?
If diarrhea appeared suddenly, the best thing would be to fast your dog. By doing this you are providing enough time for your dog’s gastrointestinal system to recover.
Therefore, in case your dog develops diarrhea, stop feeding him for 12 to 24 hours.
However, don’t apply this method to puppies. If the puppy has diarrhea, take him to the vet.
During the fasting period, you should only give your dog water, to prevent dehydration. Usually, you will see signs of improvement after six hours.
You should start your dog on probiotics as soon as you notice symptoms of diarrhea.
Probiotics are basically microorganisms that restore gut bacteria balance, reduce inflammation, improve gut health and immune system.
The most common and effective probiotics to give a dog with diarrhea are:
- Saccharomyces boulardi
- Bacillus subtilis
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Pediococcus acidilactici
Home Remedies For Dog With Diarrhea
One of the most popular foods for dogs with diarrhea is white rice. White rice contains fiber that absorbs water throughout the gastrointestinal tract, thus stabilizing the stool.
Other good options are bananas, watermelon, cooked carrots, pumpkin, yogurt, and boiled chicken.
All of these foods are rich in fiber and other nutrients that will help a dog with diarrhea. For example, yogurt is packed with probiotics which help restore gut balance.
However, don’t feed your dog full-fat yogurt, or yogurt that contains artificial sweeteners.
Also, don’t add any seasoning or vegetables like onions or garlic to the food you prepare for your dog. Spices and certain vegetables are toxic to dogs.
You can also give your dog:
This is an amino acid that heals intestinal cells. The proper dosage is 500mg per 25 pounds of body weight daily.
Marshmallow root is a herb that decreases inflammation and soothes the gastrointestinal tract. As such, it is perfect for treating diarrhea in dogs. The proper dosage is 1.5 ml per 20 pounds of body weight, twice a day.
When To Visit The Vet?
Diarrhea can quickly turn from an inconvenience to a life-threatening situation for your dog. Dehydration is the most dangerous aspect of diarrhea. Dogs with diarrhea lose so much water and electrolytes in a short period which leads to dehydration and other potentially life-threatening issues.
When you notice some of the following symptoms, you need to take your dog to the vet.
- Pale gums
- General weakness
- Diarrhea doesn’t stop
- The dog is suffering from other health issues (cancer, Cushing’s disease, diabetes)
Visit the vet, do the necessary tests to determine the severity of the situation, what caused it and how to resolve this issue.
