We know just how much our dogs want to get some of our human food, but we often have to say no because some of the food that is totally okay to us, can harm your golden retriever. Does this rule apply also to milk? Or can our dogs drink milk? The quick answer is that it depends.
But one thing is always sure , always ask your vet before sharing human foods or drinks with your dog, including milk.
Dr. Stephanie Liff said about the subject of dogs and milk, “Most dogs can drink cow’s milk or goat’s milk, however some dogs may be allergic or lactose intolerant.”
“Milk contains a sugar called lactose that requires an enzyme called lactase for digestion. Puppies generally have the enzyme in abundance as it is used to break down their mother’s milk while nursing.”
While an occasional lick of ice cream or lap of milk may not be a big deal for your dog, you should avoid dairy products as much as possible.
Some symptoms that could possibly mean that your golden retriever possibly could have lactose intolerance are: diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, constant gas and loose stool.
