Labrador Retrievers

Americans have made up their mind about their favorite dog breed! Labrador Retrievers have been chosen the most popular dog breed for 30 years in a row now! Unbelievable right? Despite so many breeds becoming more and more popular over the years, Labrador Retrievers stood strong!

The Lab made its first appearance in the American Kennel Club’s Top Ten in the 1970s and has remained there ever since! If you wonder who was number one before the Lab, it was the Cocker Spaniel. This breed held the record of 23 years of being on top!

Labrador retrievers are #1, but where are Goldens?

Now we know that Labs are number one, but what about our beloved Golden retrievers?

First of all, let me start off by saying that the breed who took second place was a real surprise! The French Bulldog jumped up to second place after being number four in 2019! How amazing right?

The French Bulldog is a real surprise taking second place

German Shepherds dogs were pushed back by the French Bulldog. The GSD used to be the second most popular dog breed in the US since 2009, however now they are 3rd.

Just like the German Shepherd slipped down one position, so did our Golden Retrievers. Instead being the third most popular dog breed in the US, Golden retrievers took the fourth place in 2020.

The fifth most popular dog breed in the US are according to AKC the Bulldogs!

Why are Lab’s so special?

Now, let’s go back to the number one breed for the past 30 years and what makes them so special.

Labrador Retrievers are pretty similar to Golden Retrievers when it comes to their personality. They make amazing family dogs because they are generally never aggressive and get along great with children! Labs are also great with other dogs. However, don’t mistake their easygoing personality for low energy. These amazing dogs are full of energy and require a lot of exercises. They will fit in with an active family the best because they love going on long walks, hikes, and runs! It is simple, Labs are athletic and bouncy so they need regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things!

Labrador Retrievers surprisingly shed a lot for short-haired dogs

One thing that is not so great is that, for short haired dogs, Labs shed SO MUCH! You wouldn’t believe how much they actually shed! Be prepared, for a lot of brushing because of the high shedding!

Conclusion

Labrador Retrievers are amazing dogs, and they definitely deserve the first place. They are very smart, loving, and caring, so it’s no surprise they are the most popular dog breed in the US! However, we are kind of sad that our beloved Golden Retrievers slipped down one position and ended up fourth.
