Meet the Oldest Golden Retriever in History: She Celebrated Her 20th Birthday!

The lifespan of golden retrievers is usually 10 to 12 years, but August, a golden retriever from Tennessee, set a record for the oldest golden retriever in history and celebrated her 20th birthday.

August has been with her owners Jennifer and Steve Hetterscheidt since she was 14, and thanks to their care, she was able to experience this amazing birthday. She celebrated her 20th birthday with her dog buddies and enjoyed a dog carrot cake.

Regardless of her age, her owners say that she still enjoys daily walks. On a weekly basis, she gets dietary supplements and eats a mixture of wet and dry foods, which helps her with her kidney problems.

After being born in 2000, August was adopted twice before finding her forever home with the current owners. She now enjoys being with her family that includes cat and dog siblings, and goes on adventures with them all over America.

  • She has lived this long because of good genetics, but also because of Jennifer who always takes care of her and maintains a good relationship with her vet – said a staff member working at the shelter where August once was before finding her forever home.
