Does your dog love your partner more than you? The dog you’re feeding the best food, the dog you are taking for a walk first thing in the morning and before you go to sleep each night. You’re not only your dog’s primary caretaker but also their trainer and disciplinarian. So why on earth does YOUR dog love your partner more than you?!
Well, there might be several reasons.
A meeting of the minds
Just like sometimes you „click“ with people, it happens to dogs too. They just „click“ with certain humans.
“Being mammals, dogs are born with temperaments,” says Dr. Joel Gavriele-Gold, licensed clinical psychologist.
“If a couple gets a dog, you may find that there’s a wired-in attraction to the one partner who has a similar temperament as the dog, whether that be laidback, hyper, or in-between.”
Instead of being jealous, be grateful that you found a dog that meshes so well with the person you love.
Allegiance can change over time
Dogs are emotional beings, they experience happiness and sadness, they also have empathy. This means that a dog’s allegiance can change over time.
Familiarity is key
What is a couple takes care of a dog equally? They walk and feed the dog equally, but the dog still prefers one partner over the other. In these cases it’s important to look at whether one person spends more time at home with the dog. If that is the case naturally the dog will want to see and spend time with the other partner, too.
When the absent partner rewards that behavior by handing out treats upon return, reinforcement and hardwiring occur.
