Ear yeast infection is very common in dogs. Some dog breeds, especially those with floppy ears, ear deformities, and allergies are particularly susceptible to ear yeast infections.

Several factors can cause ear yeast infections in dogs.

These are the most common ones:

The most common symptoms of ear yeast infection are:

  • Painful ears
  • Head shaking
  • Loss of hearing
  • Ear scratching
  • Foul smell from the ears
  • Drooped ear
  • Excessive debris 
  • Thickened ear flaps
  • Discomfort
  • Ear irritation
  • Loss of balance
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Walking in circles


The vet will use an otoscope to look at the dog’s ear canal and determine if anything blocks the canal and if the ear canal is intact. Also, the vet will take a sample from the ear and examine it under the microscope to determine the exact cause of infection.


Ear yeast infections are easily treated with antifungal medications that will eliminate yeast from the dog’s ears. The vet will most commonly prescribe Ketoconazole or Miconazole.

However, in some cases dog’s ears can be so painful that the vet will need to administer anti-inflammatory medications and painkillers. Also, in severe cases, the vet will sedate the dog to clean his ears.

In some cases, if there is an infection in the middle ear that is resilient to systemic medications, the vet will perform surgery.


Hygiene plays the most important role in the prevention of an ear yeast infection. Always clean and dry your dog’s ears after the bath or swimming. Dogs with allergies will benefit from anti-inflammatory supplements.
