Are Cane Corsos Good Family Dogs?

Are Cane Corsos Good Family Dogs?

It’s no secret that we are a bit Cane Corso obsessed. That’s why we have so many different articles on Cane Corso puppies, Cane Corso price, but also many different Cane Corso Colors, like blue, blue brindle, white, grey, and more. These are strong and powerful dogs, that can easily look intimidating to many people. They have wrongfully earned a bad reputation, and many people are wondering: Are Cane Corsos good family dogs?

The answer to this question isn’t a simple yes or no. There is so much that can have an impact on how well your dog behaves. We will go over all of the frequently asked questions that many future Cane Corso owners may have, and we will try to decide if the Cane Corso would be a good fit for your family. It’s not all up to the dog, after all. A lot of a dog’s behavior also depends on the type of family he ends up with.

Are Cane Corsos good family dogs?

The Cane Corso is a very loyal companion. Only their owner’s approval matters to them. Their personality is the result of thousands of years of breeding. There is evidence that these dogs often kept an eye on small children in the home courtyards of Ancient Rome. Kids of all ages like these dogs, and when they play with them, they are always aware of how big they are.

Also, be sure to understand how long do Cane Corsi live before you plan it for a pet dog.

Cane Corsos are very friendly when it comes to their own family. This breed, on the other hand, might be wary of new people. Your Cane Corso was originally bred to be a guard dog, so he will do everything he can to protect you. This could put your guests in danger.

Just like with any other dog, you need to get your Cane Corso used to people as soon as you bring him home. Take him on long walks around the neighborhood and try to meet as many new people as you can for him.

The Cane Corso can be a loyal, loving pet that only wants to make its owner happy. They are also known for being good watchdogs who pay close attention. Cane Corsos are great family dogs, but not all families are right for them. If you have small children, cats, or dogs, this breed is not a good choice. You must also give your Cane Corso enough time to train and exercise.

Are Cane Corsos good dogs around kids?

The Cane Corso is a great family dog for families with older children. Because they were bred to be calm and reserved, Cane Corsos can deal with well-behaved children when they are properly trained. But because they are so big and strong, dogs can accidentally hurt small children and newborns.

When you’re dealing with a big dog, you don’t want a high-energy breed near your kids. Even though they are very kind, friendly, and sweet, they could still accidentally knock a little baby to the ground and not even realize it.

Thankfully, Cane Corsos are regarded for being mellow, gentle, and reserved. These dogs are as level-headed as you can get. Corso puppies may go through a hyperactive stage, but as they get older, they usually calm down.

Also, dogs like the Cane Corso that are calmer tend to be more reliable. They don’t really have the urge to jump around randomly and maybe try to attack kids. When the dog is stable, it is much easier for the kids to get to know the dog.

If you socialize and train your Cane Corso well, it could be a great addition to your family as a second set of eyes. We never think it’s a good idea to leave your child alone at home with your dog. If a stranger approaches them, though, you can be sure they’ll look into it.

Are Cane Corsos good guard dogs?

The Cane Corso does have a natural tendency to protect the people and children he loves, such as your family. Because of this, he is a great guard dog. Even so, he might not necessarily be a threat to other people.

Any dog can be mean if it feels threatened, but the Cane Corso is usually the best friend of your family. He will never put his family in danger, and even though he may be aware of outsiders coming, he is not always hostile toward them. When you say hello to someone, he will find it easy to do the same. He might be cautious at first, but he’ll soon figure out that this is one of your friends. A Cane Corso is a great dog to keep an eye on the family.

It’s best not to leave small children alone with any dog. This is especially true for big dogs, who could easily knock a small child down by accident. Cane Corsos, which are a large breed, are, of course, right at home in this group. Our only piece of advice is that very young children should always be with an adult when they are with any animal.

Are Cane Corsos dangerous?

Cane Corsos have a reputation for being dangerous or aggressive. We don’t agree with this broad generalization. First of all, you can’t say anything about a whole breed of dogs as a whole. Second, this isn’t backed up by anything in the history of Cane Corso breeding.

People have talked a lot about their history as Roman army dogs and as a type of mastiff. The Cane Corso dogs of today, on the other hand, were never bred to fight and were never meant to be dangerous. They were made to be guard dogs and work dogs, which are two very different things. Wikipedia says that the name “Cane Corso” comes from the Italian words “Cane,” which means “dog,” and “Corso,” which means “path”.

Whether a dog is dangerous or not comes down to the dog itself, the situation, how the dog is handled, and how it was trained. Your Cane Corso mastiff won’t be dangerous if you choose a good puppy, give him a good environment, treat him well, and train him well. Instead, he will be a great pet for the family.

Do Cane Corsos turn on their owners?

A well-trained and socialized Cane Corso should never and under any circumstances turn on their owners. You have to start with proper socialization as soon as you take your Cane Corso puppy home. Dogs have to know that they can trust you and your family members. This is a powerful dog, and basic commands like “stay” or “stop” could come in handy in many different situations.

If your dog is well cared for and has been with you since an early age, he shouldn’t ever change his behavior so drastically and show aggressive behaviors towards you. Take the training process seriously, and make sure that all of the basic needs of your dog all always met.

What is the bite force of a Cane Corso?

Cane Corso owners, both now and in the future, should put the safety of others first by knowing how hard their dog can bite. Cane Corsos have a bite force of about 700 pounds per square inch (PSI), which makes them one of the dog breeds with the strongest bite force in the world. To put this in perspective, a Cane Corso has a stronger bite than a cheetah, which has a bite force of 475 PSI.

This bite force doesn’t mean that a Cane Corso bites with that much force every time it closes its jaws. Instead, it shows how strong they can be. The strength of a dog’s body as a whole depends on its size, shape, and weight. Well-trained and well-fed dogs have a stronger bite force. When you own a Cane Corso, it’s your job to train your dog so that no one is in danger of his strong jaw.

Are Cane Corsos related to Pitbulls?

Cane Corsos and Pit bulls are both strong and powerful dogs with a bad reputation. Therefore, it makes sense that many think they are related. The truth is that Cane Corsi and Pit Bulls are not connected in the sense that you might think when you hear the word “related.”

They are distantly related because all domestic dogs, including both breeds, can trace their lineage back to the wolf. Pit Bulls, on the other hand, evolved from Bulldogs and Terriers, while Cane Corsi were derived from Italian Molossers.

Pit Bulls and Cane Corsi both possess striking features, including huge, blocky heads, robust bodies, and broad, angular jaws. Both breeds have short, simple-to-maintain coats with crisp, lustrous hair that comes in a variety of colors.

Both get along well with their families, are naturally watchful and protective, and are good with kids provided they’ve been properly socialized and taught. Additionally, both might, however, exhibit a great desire to hunt, and they might or might not get along with other animals.

But there are also several differences between Cane Corsis and Pit Bulls. One is Italy’s pride, while the other is an Englishman at heart. The Cane Corso was developed primarily to be a guardian, but the Pit Bull was initially designed to outperform other dogs in blood sports while being an amiable, gentle family friend.

Is a Cane Corso stronger than a Pitbull?

You wouldn’t want to be attacked by either of these breeds, let’s get that out of the way. The bite force of a Pit Bull is 235 pounds per square inch (psi), which is higher than the 162 psi of a person. With a bite force greater than a lion’s (700 psi), the Cane Corso is much more powerful.

Does that imply that you should avoid either of them? Yes, and no. Despite the fact that both dogs have the potential to do great harm, if they are socialized and taught from a very young age, neither should show signs of hostility. In actuality, the vast majority of these canines get along well with older children. They are typically also composed, loving, and dependable.

But looking at the statistics, some accidents could happen. Pit bulls account for over 70% of fatal dog attacks, but Cane Corsos have been engaged in some horrifying events too. In that regard, it’s crucial to treat both breeds with the highest care and to be knowledgeable about any potential drawbacks they may have. Take their training seriously, and give them enough physical and mental stimulation.

Why you shouldn’t get a Cane Corso?

There are many different reasons why someone should not get a Cane Corso. First of all, let’s talk about the logistics. Do you even have the space that is needed to keep such a large breed? These canines are huge, and they aren’t a good fit for people living in small city apartments. They thrive in rural areas where there is enough space for them to run freely.

In addition to space, these dogs also cost a lot of money. It’s not just about the Cane Corso puppy price, but also all of the food and training that these dogs need. Unsurprisingly, they can eat a lot. But because they are so active, they need a protein-based diet. That requires premium dog kibble that could cost you as much as $1,000 a year. We talked more about that in our article “How Much Is A Blue Cane Corso?“.

Last but not least, if you have small kids or other small animals at home, this isn’t the breed for you. Even if you end up with a super gentle and sweet pup, they are simply too strong. The risk is too high, and you should rather wait until your kids are a bit older. But even then, never leave a dog and child to play without any form of supervision.

Are they good for first-time dog owners?

If you have never had a dog before, this breed might not be the best choice. To be honest, Cane Corsos require a lot of work, dedication, and patience. This could be too much for first-time dog owners who haven’t taken care of a dog for more than a few days.

A big dog like the Cane Corso needs room to move around so it doesn’t feel confined. They don’t do well in small spaces.  If your home isn’t big enough for a big dog like a Cane Corso, I really think you should get a smaller dog that doesn’t like to do as much and has less energy.

A new dog owner who is still getting used to having a fuzzy pet at home will do best with a smaller dog. If you’ve never had a pet before, this breed might not be the best choice, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have one. You can always seek the help of dog trainers or other professionals.

Conclusion: Are Cane Corsos good family dogs?

After reading all of the conflicting information, you might still be wondering are Cane Corsos good family dogs.  Let us put it this way. In the right hands, even these powerful war dogs make a wonderful addition to your household. However, you will have to take their training very, very seriously. You have to let them know you are the leader of the pack.

Training a Cane Corso isn’t for beginners. If you aren’t sure how to do it, enroll him in obedience classes. They thrive on positive reinforcement and need a lot of serious socialization training as well. But with the right owner, and a lot of exercises and mental stimulation, these protective dogs make mellow companions and good pets.

In the wrong hands, these large breed dogs could turn into a disaster. Their protective nature could easily turn into aggression and their powerful bodies can become weapons. That’s why we would never suggest getting a Cane Corso if you are a complete beginner. They need a responsible pet parent who doesn’t think they are intimidating.
