CBD Oil For Dogs: What To Know

CBD Oil For Dogs: What To Know

CBD has been very popular over the last few years amongst people. We see it in everything: drinks, skincare, supplements and so on. We know that there are various health benefits of it. But what about dogs? Is it safe to use CBD oil for dogs? We as pet owners only want what is best for our pups. So here is what you need to know before giving any CBD to your canine companion.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a substance that we can find in hemp and cannabis. In most cases, however, CBD oil does not contain any THC. THC is the substance in marijuana that makes someone feel “high”. In fact, most CBD products that are available in the market do not contain THC. That’s because we derive CBD from hemp and not from marijuana.

Does CBD affect dogs?

Currently, there isn’t enough research done to prove that CBD has any effects on dogs. What we do know about CBD is that it reacts with certain receptors in the nervous system. This interaction can help the body maintain a balance and promote an overall healthy state.

Can you treat health problems with the help of CBD?

There isn’t any scientific proof that by using CBD oil you can treat any health issues. However, some dog owners do swear by it. It has been reported by canine parents that CBD has helped their dogs with pain, seizures and arthritis.

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps with nausea and appetite loss. In some cases, it has even helped with treating cancer.

Currently, scientists are researching using CBD as a way to treat epilepsy in dogs. This will be the first study to gain scientific data on the use of CBD in dogs with this condition.

What are the possible side-effects of using CBD for dogs?

Just like with the benefits, there isn’t any scientific data on the possible side-effects of CBD oil for dogs. However, we know what some of the side-effects in humans are.

  • Dryness of mouth. CBD reduces the production of saliva. That can increase thirst in dogs.
  • Low blood pressure. High doses of CBD cause a drop in the blood pressure. That can create a feeling of dizziness and light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness. CBD is also used to treat anxiety. The calming effects can therefore cause slight drowsiness.

Because of these possible side effects, always make sure that you are giving your dog the proper dose of CBD.
