Curly Haired Dogs: The Top Ones

Curly haired dogs are popular not only because of their striking and cute appearance. But also because the curls bring other advantages. Not all, but some of the dog breeds with curls are known to be hypoallergenic. So people with a dog hair allergy can live together with these dogs without any problems.

If the four-legged friend has quite tight curls, then it is also insensitive to cold water. Originally, many of the dogs were bred for hunting in the water. It was of great advantage if the cold water could not harm the hunting dog.

The curls also protect against all kinds of other environmental influences. For example, if curly haired dogs run through the forest, thorn bushes can’t harm him.

Whether a dog has curls or not depends on its genes. So if a four-legged friend has curls, this is because curly haired dogs have appeared somewhere in his family tree. Numerous representatives of our four-legged friends have curls. And today we will talk about the most popular ones.

He is a very cheerful dog who sometimes is up to no good. But when he looks at you with his cute look, you can hardly be seriously angry with him.

Standard poodle

When you think of curly haired dogs, many people first think of poodles.

The standard poodle combines many excellent features: It is not only extremely robust and elegant, but also extremely sporty and intelligent. Poodles are even among the smartest dog breeds.

Not surprisingly, the four-legged friends are very easy to train and learn quickly. Especially various obedience exercises as well as agility training work excellently.

Another advantage is that the poodle is a hypoallergenic dog.

Airedale Terrier

The largest representative of the Terrier is the Airedale Terrier. He usually doesn’t get along well with other dogs and tends to bark and hunt them in their presence. The four-legged friend also does not shy away from a fight.

For this reason, it is essential that the Airedale Terrier is well socialized from puppy legs and also undergoes appropriate training in order to be able to contain this dangerous behavior as much as possible.

But there are also many good sides to the Airedale Terrier. So he is extremely intelligent and courageous. In addition, he notices that he has his own head and character and also likes to make his own decisions. He is extremely independent.

American Water Spaniel

The American Water Spaniel loves water, as its name suggests. You make him happy especially if you let him swim in a lake or river.

Because originally it was bred for the retrieval and hunting of waterfowl.

Because the four-legged friend is very playful, he is well suited as a family dog – he shows a lot of affection and love to his family. It is not only intelligent, but also has a lot of energy, which is why it is important that it is sufficiently moved and demanded. Dog sports in particular are good for this.

Portuguese water dog

And another water dog, this time from Portugal. Of course, he also loves water, as he used to accompany fishermen. His task was not only to find fishing tackle over the boat, but also to rescue seafarers who fell into the water and drown. The Portuguese water dog is therefore a particularly agile and strong swimmer.

That’s why you do the four-legged friend a favor if you go swimming with him regularly. Otherwise, he also needs as much movement and utilization as possible. Especially various dog sports inspire the Portuguese water dog. These include, for example, obedience, mobility and dock diving.

The Portuguese water dog is becoming more and more popular as a family dog, so he is an excellent companion. He also makes every effort to please his owners. In addition, it is considered hypoallergenic. He has tightly curled or wavy fur.

Miniature poodle

Poodles are among the smartest dog breeds. The dwarf poodle does everything possible to please his master or mistress as much as possible and is therefore very easy to educate.

However, you should bear in mind that poodles need a lot of activity and exercise, if they do not get this, they can develop behavioral abnormalities. So be prepared that you will travel a lot with your dwarf poodle and will probably also start dog sports.

Labradoodle

The Labradoodle is, as the name suggests, a mixture of Labrador and Poodle. Thus, it also combines characteristics of both dog breeds. The four-legged friend usually has the playful temperament of Labrador, with which he can enchant everyone. At the same time, however, the Labradoodle is also very easy to train and intelligent, which it has more of a poodle.

The four-legged friend is very loving and gets along well with families with children. There are usually no difficulties with other dogs either. Because the Labradoodle is full of energy, it must be moved and trained daily. Routines in particular help to keep it calm and balanced in this breed of dog – for example, a daily walk, which always takes place at about the same time.

Curly Coated Retriever

The Curly Coated Retriever, as its name suggests, has a curly splendor on his body. Note, however, that his genes, which are responsible for the curls, cause his hair not to sit as firmly in his skin as with other dogs.

In the worst case, this can lead to bald spots, especially after mechanical stress. You should therefore always make sure that, for example, the dog harness fits well.

These curly haired dogs are one of the largest dog breeds that have curls. At the same time, the four-legged friend is one of the oldest retriever breeds. He has very tight and small bells.

Puli

Pulis are often referred to as “mopp dog” – and the similarity to a mop cannot be denied. The coat of the sweater consists of coarse protective hair and a soft undercoat. The protective hair, the coat is not brushed regularly, into a felted, corded fur, which is reminiscent of a Rasta look. By brushing, you can keep the curls fuller.

The Puli is a very affectionate and loyal four-legged friend who always keeps loyal to his family. He is rather suspicious of strangers. Due to his great self-confidence, it can sometimes happen that the Puli takes the lead.

Kerry Blue Terrier

The Kerry Blue Terrier is also a dog with curls and a very eye-catching appearance. So he not only has a curly, gray-blue fur, but also a mustache.

This terrier is also extremely intelligent and very versatile. He is also very loyal to his human family.

The Kerry Blue Terrier were often used to guard flocks of sheep. However, the four-legged friend can also react very aggressively towards other dogs. Also note that he has a pronounced hunting instinct and thus chases after animals or digs holes in the garden.

You probably already suspect it: The Kerry Blue Terrier is not a beginner dog. The dog owner should have experience in dealing with and raising dogs and be able to educate the proud four-legged friend strongly and consistently.
