Husky: The unique beauty

Husky: The unique beauty

There is no doubt that the Siberian Husky is one of the most beautiful breeds out there. One of the trademarks of this breed and that makes the Husky so special is their beautiful, thick coat that comes in a multitude of colors and markings! Many will also agree that they look like wolves!

However, besides their looks what is it that makes the Husky so special? How is their personality and do they make good pets? How needy is this breed and are they really such drama queens?

Siberian Husky – What makes them special

To be quite honest, it’s definitely easy to see why so many people are so drawn to Huskies. However, even though they really are athletic and really intelligent dogs, they will definitely be a big challenge for first-time dog owners.

Personality and size

It’s no secret that Huskies are big, big dogs. When it comes to their height males are between 21 and 23.5 inches high. Females are a bit smaller with 20 to 22 inches. Male Huskies weigh between 45 and 60 pounds and the female 35 to 50 pounds.

Huskies don’t only look like wolves, character-wise they resemble them too. Just like wolves, they are pack animals and they need an owner who will be a strong leader. This is not only important when training them, but in general too. They are full of energy and do tend to get destructive. This can especially happen when they are bored or not given adequate exercise. You’ve probably seen videos of Huskies demolishing a house, and it’s true. They will ruin your furniture if they are left alone and if they are bored.

However, despite their occasional destructive behavior you can train them really well actually! If you establish the role of a leader your dog will respect you and do what you wont. This is why Huskies aren’t good for first-time owners, because they tend to be a little bit softer on their pets.

Huskies also don’t bark! Great, right? Well, not really. Even though they don’t bark, they LOVE to howl. And they are loud, very, very loud… They also love to throw temper tantrums when things don’t go their way.

But, please don’t be scared by everything I’ve said so far. Yes, they are chaotic, but Huskies are also quite charming and will win you over in a heartbeat! Even though they are a bit stubborn, they are also very affectionate and adore human contact. They will enjoy spending time with their owners and learning new things. They especially love (and need) long walks and runs with their owners.

Health

Huskies are generally healthy and sturdy dogs! Almost nothing can bring them down. However, just like any other dog breed the Husky is prone to certain health conditions.

Some of the illnesses Huskies are prone to are: hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and von Willebrand’s disease.

Besides these your Husky can also get:

  • Cataracts
  • Corneal Dystrophy
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Siberian Husky is truly a majestic and gorgeous dog. However, they are not for everyone, especially not for first-time owners! They need someone with a strong hand and a real leader. This is the only way they will listen to you, and won’t turn into destructive little monsters! Also, keep in mind that they need a lot of exercise, this means walks, runs, hikes. Generally the more physical activity the better!
