Why dog shows are done
At first glance, dog shows don’t make much sense. Dog owners show off their pooches while judges determine if they fit the standard. The dog that fits best wins.
But, it’s not like that. There is a purpose behind dog shows.
Firstly, many people show dogs for fun. They just want to spend an interesting day with their canines and show what they can do. But, the real purpose behind dog shows is to evaluate quality breeding stock. This way experts can keep an eye on how breeding is going. And they are making sure the integrity of the breed is maintained.
Basically, with dog shows breeders have to do their best to breed high-quality, healthy dogs that fit the standard if they want to stay on the list of reputable breeders.
Which dogs can participate in Onofrio dog shows
The majority of dog shows, like the Jack Onofrio Dog Shows, are exclusively for purebred dogs. According to the AKC, only purebred dogs that are at least 6 months old and registered at the AKC can participate in the show ring.
Sometimes the AKC will also allow non-registered purebreds to compete. In that case, they are competing through a program that grants them an “Indefinite Listings Privilege”. Basically, only dogs that appear to be purebred, but that don’t have registration papers, can participate in the shows too.
But, what about mixed breeds? Well, mixed breeds can’t be part of traditional dog shows. But they can participate in ability-based events that are formatted through The Mixed Breed Dog Clubs of America.
Now, with purebred dogs, it’s easy to judge them by the standard of that particular breed. Judges know exactly what a Golden Retriever has to look like, or a Pitbull, or any other breed. But with crossbreed, there is no standard. So, based on what are they evaluated? In mixed breed competitions the dogs are separated into three size groups:
Obviously, males and females compete separately. But judges will judge them on how well they perform and communicate with their owners.
So, it’s pretty clear what the biggest difference between purebred dog shows and mixed-breed dog shows is. With shows for purebred dogs, owners can’t spay or neuter their dogs, because the goal is to continue breeding high-quality dogs. With mixed breed dog shows it’s much different. Dog owners have to spay or neuter their crossbreed, and the focus is more on how responsible the owners are and how well they train their dogs.
How to participate
If you’re thinking about showing your dog, you should know a few things. It’s not as simple as it seems and requires more than just a purebred dog.
