We know how annoying and uncomfortable it can be to have dry and cracking skin. It’s itchy, sometimes even painful. And while we know how to help ourselves, our dogs completely depend on us for any type of health related issues. So if your dog is experiencing some crusty and cracked skin on his nose or paws, don’t just ignore it. Dry and cracked skin around the paws and nose is pretty common in some dog breeds, like French Bulldogs, for example. But thankfully there is an easy and affordable way to help them — DIY nose and paw butter for dogs.
While there are many different brands out there that make their own nose butter for dogs, trust us when we tell you that it’s more than easy to make it yourself. And the best thing is — you know exactly what you are putting on your dogs skin.
We will share how to make the easiest, completely natural and non-toxic skin butter that you can use on your dog’s cracked and dry skin all around his body.
It’s fragrance free, preservative free and completely clean. So even if your dog eats it by accident or licks it from his paws — nothing bad is going to happen!
DIY nose and paw butter for dogs
To make some butter for your dog’s cracked skin spots, you will need:
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- 2-3 drops of vitamin E oil
Supplies:
- Large glass jar or Mason jar
- Spoon
How to make it
Start off by placing a large glass jar in a medium sized pot. Fill the pot up with water. Once the water is halfway up the jar, take the jar away. That way you will know exactly how much water you need. Bring the water to boil.
While the water is heating up, add all of the ingredients that you need into the mason jar.
All of the ingredients are widely accessible and should be easy to find at your local health food store. You can also find them online on Amazon, if you don’t feel like leaving your house.
You can also add other ingredients, like avocado oil, bee-wax or shea butter. All of these will be soothing and deeply moisturizing to your dog’s cracked skin. Just melt them together with the other ingredients you choose. Side note — if you do decide to use bee-wax, make sure to grate it into smaller pieces so that it’s easier to melt.
Once the water starts to boil, you can lower the heat. Then carefully place your mason jar into the pot. This is actually called the “double boiler method”, and it’s perfectly for slowly melting the ingredients of the DIY nose and paw butter for dogs. The controlled heat will prevent the ingredients from burning.
Not every ingredient will melt equally fast. Shea butter and coconut oil will melt right away, while the bee-wax may take up to 10 minutes. Stir the mixture vigorously so that all of the ingredients melt in together.
Storing and using the nose and paw butter
The final step is to pour the mixture onto a jar or tin and allow it to cool down. A wide flat tin would work perfectly for this. But you can also empty a lip balm or moisturizer jar and use that.
You might feel tempted to use some essential oils to add some nice smell to the skin butter, however we highly suggest that you don’t. Essential oils can cause irritation and are especially irritating on cracked skin. Your dog will be better off without that additional step. And the mixture will still smell completely fine.
And now that every has cooled down — your DIY nose and paw butter for dogs is done! You can now take a small amount and apply it to your dog’s nose or paws. It will keep the area moisturized and soft, while being completely safe and non-toxic.
