Maltese Chihuahua Mix: Small And Feisty

If you are a fan of smaller dog breeds that you definitely also like Maltese and Chihuahua dogs. However, did you know that there is a crossbreed of these two? Yup, there is. And let us tell you, they are as adorable as they sound. So let’s learn together about the Maltese Chihuahua Mix breed.

Basic breed info

The Maltese Chihuahua Mix crossbreed is also known by the names Malchi, Maltechi or Malachi. And just like their parents, these dogs have small bodies but the biggest personalities. They are very loving, caring, affectionate and protecting. And suffering from small dog syndrome they will truly believe that they can protect you from anything. Even dogs ten times bigger then them. Malchi dogs mate great companions and will adapt easily in the lifestyle of most people.

This is still a relatively new crossbreed, having only been introduced in 2000. However, they are definitely worth considering if you are looking for a dog to adopt into your family.

Appearance

Just like with any other crossbreed, the appearance of a Maltese Chihuahua Mix dog can vary tremendously. However, these dogs are always of a smaller size. Their height is somewhere between 12 to 14 inches, while their weight is somewhere from 5 to 15 pounds.

The type of their coat is also very versatile. In most cases they inherited the longer and fluffier coats of their Maltese parents. When it comes to color, there are many variations: white, black, cream or brown.

Price

While these dogs are still a relatively new crossbreed, their popularity is definitely admirable. So it’s no wonder that they aren’t cheap at all. You might be able to find suspiciously good deals from some backyard breeders, however know that it isn’t worth it. It’s always better to pay a little bit extra but getting your dog from a reputable breeder. That way you will lower the chances of your dog being unhealthy.

On average, you will have to pay from $700 to $1,500 for a Malchi dog.

Personality

While these dogs are very small, they are still feisty. They often forget how small they really are and will get into arguments with dogs ten times their size. If not even larger. This is definitely a personality trait that they get from their Chihuahua parent. Another Chihuahua personality trait they have is being incredibly chatty. These dogs will bark, so you better be prepared for it. They will let you know of any possible visitors, weather it’s humans, cats, other dogs or just a leaf dancing on the sidewalk.

However, if you want a highly intelligent dog — know that you can’t go wrong with a Malchi. With both of his parents being very intelligent dog breeds, the Maltese Chihuahua Mix also inherited their natural cleverness. But the flipside to this is that Machi dogs also can be very stubborn. Especially if they weren’t trained well and at an early age.

The training will be a bit challenging, for both dog and owner. However, with a lot of patience and time everything will be possible. Positive reinforcement, rewarding your dog with treats and praising him generously will do wonders.

Exercise

If you’re not a super active person that thrives on exercise than this dog breed is just for you. While they are full of energy, they don’t have any high exercise requirements. They love easy walks through the dog park, playing indoors or in your backyard.

However, they are also very happy by just relaxing in front of the TV or in your lap while you’re watching your favorite show. These dogs are easy going and have nothing against taking things at a slower pace.

A 30 minutes long walk a day will keep them healthy and happy. However, a walk at the dog park will definitely take longer as these canines love to socialize with other dogs or people.

Grooming

The level of maintenance your Malchi dog requires will depend on the type of coat he inherited. If your dog inherited a longer, white coat —you already know it will be prone to staining.

When it comes to shedding, in most cases they are low to moderate shedders.

Either way regular appointments at the dog salon and weekly brushing will be required. And in between appointments make sure to wash your do at least every two to three weeks.

One area that many dog owners often overlook is cleaning their dog’s ears and teeth. However, your dog will be so much healthier and feel so much better if you take care of his teeth and ears as well.

Health And Lifespan

In most cases, Malchis are pretty healthy dogs. However there are a few health concerns that you will have to be careful about. The most common ones are ear and eye infections. Intestinal and digestive problems are pretty common as well.

Healthy Maltese Chihuahua Mix dogs will live a healthy life with a lifespan from 12 to 15 years.
