Moyen Poodle: What makes them different?

Moyen Poodle: What makes them different?

Moyen Poodle. It sounds kind of French, doesn’t it? That’s because it is French! Moyen is actually a French word that means. So, the Moyen is a medium-sized poodle! We have the standard poodle, the smaller size toy poodle. And the medium size between those two is a Moyen poodle.

These dogs are also known as ‘klein Poodles’, with klein being the German word for small. As you can probably tell by the variety of names, the Moyen size Poodle is especially popular in Western Europe. However, they made their way up into the United States as well, where there are getting more and more popular. But interestingly, not recognized as a separate variation.

The AKC doesn’t really agree with these Poodle varieties, and according to them, the Moyen is basically just a small Standard Poodle. While the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognizes them as a separate dog breed. In this article, we’re going to learn more about this breed size and see if he would make an excellent family dog for you.

Moyen Poodle

To better explain the difference between Poodles let’s take a look at their size.

First, the Moyen Poodle is between 15 and 20 inches tall. They weigh between 20 and 30 pounds.

Secondly, a standard poodle is between 24 and 27 inches tall and 50 to 70 pounds heavy.

Thirdly, a miniature poodle is between 10 to 15 inches tall, and 10 and 20 pounds heavy.

As you can see, there is a difference between them. Below is a picture that shows the size difference between poodles better.

Size difference between poodles

Now we know that there is a significant size difference between poodles. But are there any other differences? Do they have the same nature? The same needs?

How they look

How does a Moyen look like? Do these poodles look the same as the standard-sized? Yes, they do! All poodles look almost the same. The only difference is in their size. The adult size of these dogs is between 15 and 20 inches, and the Moyen Poodle weights between 20 to 30 lbs.

The Kleinpoodle has a straight muzzle and dark eyes. Their ears fold over close to their head.

While the American Kennel Club doesn’t recognize them as a breed, they are one. A Moyen poodle is a purebred poodle. How could they not be? They are a result of breeding a standard poodle with a mini poodle!

According to many people, these dogs are a perfect size. They have all the great characteristics of a poodle, but in a great size. Not too small, not too large. They are big enough to play around with and do workouts together. But they are small enough for a flat.

Coat

The Moyen has a curly coat. They have the same colors every other poodle has. They can be one color or more colors. For example a mix of three colors.

A Moyen Poodle’s coat colors can include:

  • Black
  • White Moyen Poodle
  • Brown Poodles
  • Grey
  • Red
  • Silver Poodle
  • Cream
  • Apricot Moyen Poodle
  • Silver Beige

Moyens are hypoallergenic dogs. This means they won’t cause an allergic reaction.

Because of this, their curls don’t let any hair fall out. So, this is why it’s important to brush them regularly. You don’t want their coat to mat.

Nature

If you’re not already in love with the Moyen, after reading this you will be! Let’s take a look at their nature. How they are, and what you can expect when bringing one of these pups to your home.

The medium poodle is playful and has a lot of energy. So they will love runs, hikes, and long walks. However, they won’t be ideal if you have very small children, as they could easily knock over a toddler. But a bit older kids will love them, and they are an excellent choice for a family dog.

They are very smart. They actually rank second on the list of the most intelligent dogs. This means they are trainable dogs. Moyen poodles are also very obedient. So, they will do as you say. They want to please you. But you have to show them who the pack leader is for them to really listen to you.

They love being the center of attention and act like clowns. One thing is sure, there won’t be a dull moment with them. They also love to go on adventures and make great travel companions. Especially because they also have a relatively compact size.

One bad trait they have is that they are very stubborn. So they need a firm leader. Someone who will let them know who the boss is. As we already explained, you have to introduce yourself as the pack leader.

But, that doesn’t mean they don’t like cuddles! These poodles love to be loved! One of their favorite activities is cuddling!

Health

Moyen poodles have a lifespan of 12 and 15 years and are healthy dogs. Which is pretty long, however, they will only live this long if take good care of their health. Like any other breed they can experience some health issues.

Firstly, minor issues:

  • entropion,
  • distichiasis,
  • cataract,
  • glaucoma,
  • lacrimal duct atresia

Secondly, major health issues:

  • progressive retinal atrophy,
  • trichiasis,
  • epilepsy,
  • Legg Perthes disease,
  • patellar luxation
  • hip dysplasia

This is why it’s important to buy your poodle from a good breeder. Find someone you can trust. Also, find someone who will have all the needed health documentation. It’s good to have information on the parents too.

So, know who you’re buying from. There are so many people who only want the money. Reputable breeders will make sure your dog is free of genetic defects and genetic diseases.

In addition to that, make sure your dog is eating healthy food and gets his exercise needs met as well. A dog can only be as healthy as his lifestyle is.

How much do Moyen poodles cost?

Lastly, we need to talk about their price. Because after learning all of these things about this dog, you probably can’t help but wonder: How much do Moyen poodles cost? We have to give you a warning right away, these dogs won’t be cheap.

Moyen poodles are very expensive. Poodles in general are expensive. But Moyens are on a whole new level. I am not kidding. The price of these dogs definitely isn’t for the faint of heart.

If you buy your poodle from a reputable breeder get ready to pay around $2500! And that’s the minimum. The price can go up to $3,500! But the higher price is well worth it when buying from a reputable breeder as they provide the necessary documentation and health tests.

Of course, there are additional expenses too. For example, vet visits, grooming, and high-quality food. I don’t want to scare you. But it costs a lot to own a dog!

They won’t only cost you money. They will cost you time too! Just like any other breed, poodles require a lot of attention. For example, you’ll have to go on walks and play with them. Even when you have no time.

Sure, there is also the option to adopt. But finding a Moyen poodle rescue dog will be hard.

Conclusion

To conclude, the Moyen poodle is a great dog. A dog to wish for! There are many reasons why they are so amazing.

Firstly, their size. Many people believe that they have the perfect size. They are great for playing around, but won’t hurt you like the large poodle. They also aren’t fragile like the mini poodle.

Secondly, they have all the best characteristics. They are smart, loving, kind, and playful. Everything you could wish for in a dog. They are also very smart and willing to learn.

But do remember, they might get a bit stubborn. Thirdly, they are healthy! The most important thing is that your dog is healthy! Lastly, I just want to say. You definitely won’t regret getting a Moyen poodle!
