Huskies are my favorite dogs. Sure, they are drama queens. And hard to take care of, but this ancient sled dog is truly great by nature. Another great dog is the Rottweiler. Obedient and strong. Also, very smart. Now, imagine a mix of these two dogs. A Rottweiler Husky Mix.
A mix of those two dogs is actually called a Rottsky. And they are gorgeous designer dogs. I am not hyping them up. They really are astonishing.
But, what is it that makes them so amazing? What are they like? And what do they even look like?
Don’t worry, I did my homework and learned a lot about them. So, I will share it all with you!
Rottweiler Husky Mix – Your guide
The Siberian Husky and the Rottweiler are two completely different dogs. Starting from their coat to nature. They don’t have much in common. Yet, the mix between these two exists. This designer dog costs between 500 and 1500 dollars.
Before I talk more about the Rottsky, there’s something else I have to say. This dog is a designer dog. It means they are a mix of two breeds.
So, we can’t say for sure how they will act like. We don’t even know how they will look like.
But, one thing is for sure. They will look more like one parent breed or the other. So, they will look either like the Siberian Husky parent. Or the Rottweiler parent.
That’s the thing with designer dogs. You really have to like both breeds to get a mixed breed. In this case, you have to like the Husky and the Rottweiler. This means you can’t pick and choose. What you get is what you get.
I know that sounds a bit harsh. But that’s how it is. Many people forget that they are getting a mixed breed. And think they will get the perfect dog with the best traits of both parent breeds. Of course, sometimes this can be true. But in most cases, the puppies will be more like one parent or the other.
What they look like
So, what does the Rottweiler Husky mix look like?
The Rottsky is a large dog. Just like the parent breeds are. The males are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 75 and 95 pounds. The females are smaller. So, they are 20 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 55 to 80 pounds.
Their coat is medium to long with a normal density. Their fur is generally straight and can be:
- black
- brown
- cream
- white
- sable
- gray
Their coat can be only one color or any combination of two or three colors. Their ears are triangular in shape. And can either be erect or folding down. Basically, this depends on which parent they look like more. They are definitely not hypoallergenic dogs. Because of their Husky parent, they can also have blue colored eyes.
The life expectancy of Rottskys is 10 to 13 years. But, if you take good care of them and feed them a healthy and balanced diet they can even reach the age of 15.
What they are like
What I said about the appearance of designers dogs applies to their temperament too. The Rottsky can be like either parent. Or a combination of both. But, looking at both parent breeds we can form an idea.
The Rottsky is generally a very active dog. This isn’t surprising because both parents are working dogs according to the ACK. They are also highly intelligent and have a high energy level. Because of this, they need a lot of exercises and mental stimulation.
They are friendly and sociable. But, be careful. They are hunters. So, if they see a cat or another little animal, they might run after them in hopes of catching them.
Besides this, they are affectionate and loving. They are even friendly with strangers. But they will also protect you if needed.
Like with any other dog, early socialization is important. Every dog should be exposed to many people, animals, places, and situations while they are still young. This way they won’t act out when they grow up.
The Rottsky shouldn’t have problems with kids either. If raised right the dog should be calm around your child. But, of course, teach your kid how to behave with the dog too. So no pulling on ears or tail. And no riding the dog like a horse.
Rottweilers and Siberian Huskies are both protective and alert, so their mix will make a great guard dog.
Health and grooming
If your Rottsky got the Rottweiler parent’s coat, then you shouldn’t have a problem maintaining it. Gentle brushing every other day and bathing them when needed will be enough.
But, if they took after the Siberian Husky, then brace yourself. Huskies have a thick double coat. So they have an undercoat and an outer layer. This double coat protects them from the cold and heat.
It’s practical for dogs, but a pain for humans. Why? They will shed like crazy. You will probably have to brush them every day. Especially during spring and autumn. That’s when the shedding gets worse.
The Rottweiler Husky mix can have a number of health problems during its life. For example_
- hip dysplasia
- cataracts
- osteochondritis dissecans
- osteosarcoma
- bloat
They can also have eye problems. So please take them to the vet regularly for checkups. Just to be sure that everything is okay.
Part of their health is also exercise. The Rottsky is an active dog. So, they will need 90 minutes to two hours of exercise daily.
If you decide to buy a Rottsky puppy, make sure you’re buying from a high quality breeder. That way you will make sure that your Rottweiler and the Siberian mix dog is healthy.
