Poodle Pointer: The German Pudelpointer

Poodle Pointer: The German Pudelpointer

The Poodle Pointer is a rough-haired hunting dog from Germany. Two hunters had the goal of creating a versatile hunting dog. The crossbreeding of a large poodle and pointer in the 1880s resulted in a hunting dog with ideal characteristics. The poodle brought the good retrieval ability and hunting sharpness, the pointer the excellent nose.

The Poodle Pointer is mainly used as a lead dog in fields, meadows and water.

Basic Breed Info

As a rule, Poodle Pointers are only given to hunter’s hands. As a result, it is a rather rare breed of dog. Typical of many hunting dog breeds, only dogs that take a work test or breeding test are admitted. They still aren’t recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Appearance

Female poodle pointers grow between 55 and 63 cm tall. Male dogs are slightly larger at 60 to 68 cm. There is no weight set in the FCI breed standard. Depending on the size, however, a poodle pointer weighs about 25 to 30 kg.

The medium-long rough hair only appears in one color in the colors brown, black and grey. Only small white patches are allowed according to the breed standard.

Essence

The Pudelpointer impresses with its versatile hunting skills. Due to the breeding criteria, this breed is a hunting dog through and through. A strong hunting instinct paired with high endurance and strong urge to move characterizes the Pudelpointer. In addition, this breed is known for its strength of nature and nerves. Intrepid and caught, the lead dog does its job. He is therefore considered a fairly balanced breed of dog as long as it is sufficiently utilized.

Many hunting dog breeds are loners and rather reserved towards strangers. The Pudelpointer, on the other hand, is a sociable dog, even if he is on the road as a single hunter. Most dogs of this kind are cheerful and playful. Staying alone is not one of the strengths of the poodle pointer and should be trained early.

The characteristics of the poodle make this prostood dog a obedient and docile four-legged friend. However, since the large poodle pointer needs a lot of activity and at the same time carries an immense hunting instinct, it is not suitable for inexperienced first-time dog owners. If the poodle pointer lacks mental and physical utilization, it tends to undesirable behavior. I can express this, for example, in permanent barking or destructive rage.

Activity

First and foremost, the poodle pointer should be able to pursue his passion as a hunting dog. He particularly likes working in the water. But all other types of terrain do not stop the versatile hunting dog from the excellent hunting services either. The all-rounder likes to retrieve and browse. Especially the search in the field, the Pudelpointer operates quickly, extensively and reliably.

Variety offers the Pudelpointer various dog sports. For example, agility, mantrailing, retrieval games or obedience are equally suitable. Especially search games are popular with poodle pointers due to the fine nose.

Attitude

A balanced Poodle Pointer absolutely needs physical and mental utilization in the great outdoors. Varied hunting or similar tasks should therefore be integrated into everyday life. Ideally, this breed of dog lives in a hunter’s household. If a dog does not pass the hunting suitability test, it is also occasionally handed over to non-hunters. Especially then, however, his family should be sporty and very active.

The poodle pointer loves freedom and movement. Ideally, the sociable hunting dog lives with his people on a large property in the countryside. As a rule, conspecifics are also welcome roommates for the poodle pointer. The attitude in a city apartment with walks in the hustle and bustle of the city does not fit the nature of this freedom-loving working dog.

Due to the strong hunting instinct, particular emphasis should be placed on an outbreak-proof garden. If the poodle pointer whisper wild or has taken a trail, he really wants to investigate it.

Care and health

The wiry fur serves an important purpose. It protects against all weather conditions and cleans itself almost independently. Foreign bodies can still get caught in the rough coat. The dry hair dress should therefore be brushed out regularly. Since the poodle pointer is also traveling in wild nature, it should be examined after hunting ticks & Co. The beard of the poodle pointer should also be combed regularly to avoid felting.

The hanging ears of this prosiding dog are prone to inflammation due to contamination. Regular ear control and, if necessary, cleaning is recommended in any case. Fungal infestation or persistent inflammation can be prevented.

Breeding-typical diseases are not known due to breeding selection. For example, pre-stressed parents must not be approved for breeding. Accordingly, joint diseases, for example, are not common, which often occur, especially in larger dog breeds. In general, the poodle pointer enjoys good health.

The life rating of the robust all-rounder is around 14-15 years.
