German Shepherd Beagle Mix: The sassy dog

German Shepherds are one of the smartest dog breeds. The Beagle is sweet and gentle. So, how does the mix of these two look like? How is the German Shepherd Beagle mix?

One thing is for sure, the Beagle Shep is a very intelligent designer dog.

Because this is a hybrid, there is no rule on which traits the dogs will have. Will they be more like one parent breed, or the other.

So, to get to know the crossbreed, we first have to look at the parent breeds, the German Shepherd and the Beagle. That way we will understand how the German Shepherd Beagle Mix will turn out and how they might be.

Predicting the traits of a hybrid dog is not easy. Even when we know how each parent breed is. Each puppy in the litter could look and behave different.

That’s how it is with designer dogs. And that’s one of the reasons why many people don’t support them.

I personally don’t understand the hype around designer dogs. In my opinion, they are just overpriced mutt. So why not just get a mixed dog from the shelter? So, why pay thousands of dollars?

Anyways, let’s take a look at all the characteristics of the German Shepherd Beagle Mix.

Beagle Shep

We don’t know when the Beagle Shepherd was created. But it was probably in the ’90s or 2000s. This designed breed was created to produce a dog with a better sense of smell. A dog that is hardworking and strong. And also a dog that is a great tracker.

You see, the Beagle Shep is a new designer dog. They haven’t been around for a long time. So, we couldn’t study them in-depth either. Basically, we don’t know much about this breed. But, we do know some things about them.

What they are like

Given that their German Shepherd parent is a smart and intelligent dog, we can say the say about the mix too! Besides this, they are guard dogs, so they will process their family.

Both the parent breeds have a lot of energy. So they also need a lot of exercises. Be ready for a dog that loves long walks and runs. But also a dog that will enjoy spending time with you.

If you want a dog that spends his days on the couch, then the Beagle Shep is not for you. They want to play. And play a lot!

So, if you’re someone who loves the outdoors. If you’re sporty and active. Then this is the dog for you! But, keep in mind. They are a bit stubborn. So you will need a lot of patience when training them.

Early socialization is a must too! You want them to trust people and be calm when they grow up. And not attack everyone and everything that is unfamiliar to them.

What they look like

The German Shepherd Beagle mix is around 15 to 24 inches tall, and 20 to 70 pounds heavy. There is no rule how they will look like. It depends on which parent they take after. They can look more like the German Shepherd parent, or more like the Beagle parent.

We know that the German Shepherd is bi-colored, and so is the Beagle. So the Beagle Shep will be as well. Their coat is dense and medium length. They could even have a double coat. It can be black, liver, blue, red, tan, or white.

But don’t worry, they don’t shed that much. You will have to brush them that much, just a quick daily brush will be enough.

Exercise and training

The German Shepherd Beagle Mix is not that demanding in grooming. But they are demanding when it comes to exercise.

They are super smart and easy to train. That is if they listen to you! Sometimes they will be a bit sassy and ignore you. They’ll simply choose not to listen to you. and ignore you

But, never give up! Remember, positive reinforcement is key. And patience also.

The Beagle Shep has a lot of energy. This dog needs at least an hour of active exercise a day. They also need mental stimulation. So regular exercise and play sessions, as well as games for mental stimulation, are a must!

Health

The Beagle German is a very healthy dog. They don’t have many health problems at all. But that doesn’t mean they can’t get sick at all.

In some cases they can inherit conditions like:

  • hip dysplasia
  • elbow dysplasia
  • general mobility problems
  • epilepsy
  • bloating
  • eye conditions

I don’t want to scare you, all of these are possible. But it doesn’t mean your dog will get sick. Make sure you feed your dog a balanced diet and high-quality food. Also, let them get enough exercise and they should be fine.
